Happy Birthday Babe!

Today is the love of my life and husband-to-be’s birthday!  So, for those who don’t want to listen to me dedicate a post to him, this might be the appropriate time to take a bathroom break; because this one is dedicated to my Wesley.

Its been a year since Wesley came into my life and what an amazing year its been for us!  I couldn’t imagine my life without him.  Words cannot express the amount of joy he has brought into my life.  We’ve experienced so many new and exciting things together and I can’t wait to continue making memories with him for the rest of our lives.

Anyone who knows our relationship knows that Wesley and I are constantly laughing with each other, making up quirky inside jokes to tell one another at inappropriate times (which others find rather annoying, but we find it funny), and we always remind each other how much we love one another.  Yes, we are “that” couple, and we are perfectly happy just the way we are.  Wesley makes every day an adventure for us and our relationship, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  There is never a dull moment in our home, trust me!  He’s my rock, my protector, my biggest fan, my love, and my everything.  He always has a funny joke to tell at the right time to cheer me up, or a soft place for me to land when I've had a hard day.  He listens and gives me the best advice, and will do anything in his power to make sure I'm taken care of.  He works from sun up to sun down to provide for us and make sure we have the best life we possibly can, and I always remind him of how much I appreciate everything he does for us and our future.  He's truly amazing, and an angel...my angel from Heaven.

I won’t go on & on about how wonderfully amazing the man I'm marrying is because I’m sure no one else wants to read about our love story (except us, of course - :-)).  But just know this, my Wesley David, I love you with everything I have and am a better person because of you.  You’re amazing, and I’m so blessed that God brought you to me so we could spend the rest of our lives laughing just as hard and making memories just as memorable as we do now.  I love you very much and I can’t wait to celebrate your birthday with you this evening!

They're Finally Here!!

It’s been quite a couple weeks since I’ve given an update on what’s been going on up here.  As I’m sure you can guess by the lack of posting, LOTS has been going on!  Let’s start where I left off.  Wednesday the 15th was my last day of work before my vacation started!  I was off Thursday & Friday & then the whole next week because my parents came to visit us!

Thursday I spent all day cleaning the house, getting things ready, and preparing for my parents to come that night!  They flew into Billings about midnight, and we were all SO happy to see each other!  It’s so hard to believe it’s been 8 months since we’d seen them last.  After we got all our hugs in we loaded up in the truck & headed for home.  It takes about 2 hours to get from the ranch to Billings, so we got home about 2:30 AM Friday morning.  Friday the 17th we had to pregnancy check our heifers (a previously scheduled event that we couldn’t get around), so we got up about 7, I fixed breakfast, and we all headed out to help run the heifers thru the chute to be tested.  My Mom & Dad got to really see what our ranch life is like when we’re working cattle & such, and I was glad they did.  Dad helped out with running the heifers up the chute, and Mom helped with the ear tag numbers.  We got done about 11 that day, and Wesley and I trailed the open heifers out one way, and the bred heifers another way.  After a quick (but delicious) lunch at the Davenport’s we headed home to clean up & head to Miles City for the afternoon.  We got to Miles City about 2:30 Friday afternoon, and Mom and I dropped the guys off at the bar to have a few beers & watch whatever sports game was on, and she and I went shopping for a dress for me for our wedding.  We were successful, and I ordered it that day!  After we reunited with the fellas, we headed to a Montana souvenir shop to load the parents up on all kinds of Montana goods!  They got out of there with some t-shirts & a cap to show for their trip to the Big Sky.  We then took them to one of our favorite places to eat in Miles City…Little Caesars.  Just kidding!  We took them to Rib & Chop for a nice steak dinner.   Since we had such a late night the night before with hardly any sleep, all of us turned in earlier Friday night so we could get a good night’s sleep for the weekend.

Saturday (the 18th) morning we all had a nice breakfast together, then packed up & headed to Deadwood, South Dakota for the day/night!  We got to Deadwood about 1:00 that Saturday afternoon, unpacked our things, then headed to gamble!  None of us had any real luck, so we headed back to the room about 5 to get ready for supper that evening & more gambling (of course!).  We ate a delicious prime rib supper at one of the restaurants in Deadwood, then hit up the casino’s again!  We all had a lot of fun going in & out of the different casinos trying our luck at different games.  And, Mom and Dad really enjoyed the drive to Deadwood.  They got to see some beautiful mountains along the way.  And, they even got pictures at the Wyoming and Montana state lines (South Dakota doesn’t have a state sign – according to Wesley its because they are ashamed of their crap hole state …he’s a character)!  Sunday we ate at Kevin Costner’s restaurant in Deadwood, packed up, and headed to Keystone, SD to see Mount Rushmore.  It was a really neat thing to visit.  OF course we got all the tourist pictures in front of Mount Rushmore, bought t-shirts & souvenirs from there as well, then started the journey back to Montana to the ranch.  It took about 4 ½ hours to get from Mount Rushmore back to the ranch.  Mom & I stopped at a store that was going out of business in Belle Fourche, SD for some groceries, and ended up getting lots more!  It was a fun Mother-Daughter quick trip together.

Monday we all slept in (a little), sat around & talked a little Monday morning, then packed a cooler, loaded up in the truck, and Wesley and I took them all around the ranch (including the burned part of the ranch).  It took a good 3 hours to go around the ranch with my parents, and after coming in for lunch, we all took a quick nap.  Monday afternoon and evening was spent playing all kinds of games as a family, and in between playing games Wesley and I made a delicious steak dinner for my parents & us to enjoy together.  Tuesday Wesley had to go to the neighbor’s house to help them gather their herd, so my Mom & Dad went down to the Amish community to their country store to get some homemade goodies.  We all loaded up on their homemade egg noodles!  We all love them…they are great in soups & such.  Then we came back and my mom rode our horse Champion.  She wanted nothing more than to get on a horse & ride again, so we did just that!  And, if you can believe this, my DAD even got on Champion for a few quick pictures!  I do have the proof, and I WILL be posting them in the next week.  I’ll be posting lots of pictures from their trip up to the Big Sky.  Tuesday evening David & Moo Moo came over and we all enjoyed a nice steak supper together, and it gave our parents a good chance to talk & get to know one another.  They all laughed & had a great time together.

Wednesday was the day we all dreaded coming, but we knew it was going to come whether we wanted it to or not.  Wednesday was the day they went home.  My Mom had a really difficult time with it.  She cried a lot Wednesday, but we both reassured her that we would be seeing them in less than 4 months!  In fact, its like 16 (or so) weeks from now when we see them again!  So, that made her feel better.  When we got to the airport, we walked with them to check their bags in, and said good-bye at the security checkpoint.  I held it together for my Mom’s sake, but cried on Wesley when they left.  We will NOT be going this long without seeing each other again…it’s TOO long!!

Now that we are all back to work, I think everyone has once again settled into their routines.  We don’t have much planned for this labor day weekend, except for a roping on Saturday here in Forsyth.  We’re hoping to do a little fishing, maybe go on a picnic, and just enjoy the weekend together.  Wesley has a birthday coming up so we have another event to celebrate soon!

Sorry it took so long for me to update, and I will get the pictures up from my parents trip to Montana soon!!

It's almost time

Last week was sort of a blur because it went by so fast.  I literally couldn’t tell you what we did last week, except for work.  Friday evening we roped at the house after I got off work.  Saturday we woke up to the sweet sound of raindrops on the window.  Although it didn’t last as long as we would have liked it to, it was a nice sight that’s for sure!  Saturday afternoon Wesley & I went to Miles City to get some last minute groceries & such before the arrival of my parents this week!  Sunday we had a round robin roping to go to (Wesley entered, I took pictures) about 50 miles from the house.  Clint & Sarah were there, so while the guys roped Sarah and I got some much needed catch up time between the two of us.  We haven’t gotten to catch up with each other in quite some time, so we really enjoyed swapping stories about recent happenings in all our lives.  Their son Jack will be 1 in October, so we were talking about birthday plans for the little man.  I cannot believe he will be 1 already!  I remember when he was born, and holding him when he was just a couple months old.  Time really does fly.

This week is the week that Texas comes to Montana in the form of my parents!!  We are so very excited to see them & show them around the ranch!  We’ve got all kinds of things planned for when they are here, and we can’t wait to show them what we do here, for both work & pleasure.  We will be sure to take lots of pictures, and I’ll be sure to share them with everyone.  My mom is the designated picture-taker person, so I know we’ll get lots of pictures!!  I’ve been preparing the house (both inside & out) for their arrival, and besides a few last minute things, we are all geared up & ready to see them.  And, with my parents coming up means I’ll be on vacation!  Hooray for time off!

And last but not least, for those who either haven’t seen the Brenham paper or don’t know, Wesley and I are getting married this November with a reception to be held in Texas in December when we go to visit!!  We are extremely excited about our wedding & can’t wait to celebrate with everyone!

The Sand Creek Fire

Fire – (n.) a state, process, or instance of combustion in which fuel or other material is ignited and combined with oxygen, giving off light, heat, and flame.   Fire has been ravaging our state, particularly the southeastern portion, since the end of June, and a fire is what happened last week on the ranch in which we live.  It was Tuesday, July 31st.  Wesley got in about 7:30 that evening from hauling hay, we ate a nice supper together, and settled in to watch a little TV before heading for bed.  About 10:00 PM I looked out the window & noticed a big dry lightning storm moving in overhead.  Wesley made the comment that there was probably going to be a lot of fires that night.  Little did we know at that time that we were going to be one of them.  Around 11:15 p.m. Jewel called the house & said there was a fire between our pasture & the neighbors (or so they thought).  I looked out the bedroom window & could see a big orange glow to the south & east of the house.  Wesley told me to stay at the house and he & his Mom set out to go look to see where the fire was.  At 11:45 p.m. Rosebud County Fire called our house stating that there was a fire on the Diamond Ranch (our ranch), and that their crews were lost trying to find the best way to get to the fire.  I don’t know much about the different paths to take across this ranch, but I damn sure knew the best way to get them to this fire.  So, I told the dispatcher that I’d head up to where the fire crews were, meet them, and take them thru the gate that was closest to the fire so they could start fighting it.

I met the crews a little before midnight up the creek they were coming down, and led them to the gate they could get to the fire best through.  At that point Wesley & Jewel (Moo Moo) were coming down from the fire, and we were gathering a game plan on how to best attack this thing.  It was up in the pine & cedar trees, and at this point there was no putting it out.  The best approach was to get a bulldozer, and put a nice fire line or guard around it to stop it once it gets out of those trees.  Between the time I got the firefighters to the fire, and about 5:00 a.m. there were over 11 active fires within Rosebud County.  Homes were being threatened and they needed all the manpower they could get at that particular fire.  So, the fire crews left (all except 1), and we had to gather our thoughts and figure out what to do next.  David got home about 11:00 that Wednesday morning, and him & Wesley started back-burning to help reinforce the fire lines that were made using the blade (road grater) that we had out there.  All the dozers were taken from our place as well, because they were needed elsewhere.  Between the tractor disk & the blade, we had a decent fire line going.  The guys fought the fire all day Wednesday, and by Wednesday night things were looking better.  Jewel and I ran back & forth all day Wednesday between the fires & the house.  We made breakfast, lunch, and supper for all the firefighters, and kept everyone hydrated.  None of us slept at all Tuesday night, except for about an hour between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. when the 3 of us (Wesley, myself, and Jewel) all fell asleep in the truck watching the dozer & blade make fire lines around the fire.  So by about midnight Wednesday night Wesley and I called it an evening & went home to get some sleep.

Thursday we were up at 5:00 a.m. so that Wesley could help David try to do a little more back-burning before the sun started heating things up, and before the winds started picking up.  We had 2 neighbors with little water trucks (water tanks on the back of their truck…they hold about 400 gallons of water) helping us hold each end of the fire, and we were very thankful they came out to help us.  Jewel and I, again, made breakfast for everyone, then set out to help monitor the fire lines.  She and I went on one end of the fire, and Wesley and David went to the other end.  About 10:00 a.m. the winds started coming up with a vengeance.  Every 5 minutes the wind direction was shifting, and you never knew whether the fire was going to go North, South, East, or West.  It was that morning that Jewel and I watched the fire as it jumped the fire guard that was put in by the blade.  We radioed to Wesley & David that our fire had jumped the lines, and about that time Wesley radioed back to us that their end had jumped the guard as well.  To say we were in a pickle would be putting it mildly.  We had no help on this fire.  The fire was, as of Thursday morning, turned over to the DNRC (Department of Natural Resources Conservation -  the government), and we could get no one to come with a dozer to help put bigger, stronger fire lines around the fire.  That afternoon we were able to get a dozer out there, but that morning we were on our own.  About 1:00 p.m. we realized the fire was heading straight for the pasture that the cows were just moved in to earlier that week.  Wesley raced home & loaded up 4 horses for us, and we met him at home to help, then we headed out to try to gather the cows as fast as we could.  By the time we got back there it was too late.  The fire had moved too fast and it wasn’t safe.  So, Jewel and I went around and opened all the gates so the cattle could run free & prayed they would get out.  We went up on to a ridge where a water tank was, and I chased the cows out of there & down the hill in an effort to get them to move in the right direction…away from the fire.  About 4:00 Wesley got back from helping the neighbor fight fire (the fire now jumped from our property to the neighbors, and was heading directly for his house) so he and I went to the south end of the place where the fire was also headed, got on top of a hill, and called & called cows until we couldn’t call anymore.  We also opened gates on that end of the ranch as well.  Then we decided it was best to go start putting fire lines around the hay yards we had.  The winds had shifted once again, and the fire was now heading west…toward homes and hay.  Wesley used the skid steer and box to put fire lines around the hay yards, and I drove up & down the road monitoring what the fire was doing, and what direction it was heading.  At about 7:30 p.m. Moo Moo came to the hay yard that Wesley and I were at, and told me that we needed to start putting fire lines around our home, water our house & our yard, get out anything that we wanted to save or anything that was valuable, and drive the vehicles over the bridge across the creek because the fire was heading this way.  After I cried for about 5 minutes, I realized I had to get moving and quick.  I helped Wesley put in fire lines around our home (in the dark with me guiding him with the headlights from the pickup), then he & I headed inside to decide what we wanted to take with us, and what we wanted to leave behind.   I can’t begin to tell you what it feels like, but at that point there was nothing we could do.  If the fire was going to take our home, it was going to take it.  We gathered clothes, pictures, wedding stuff, guns, and sentimental things and loaded them in the Durango, then headed across the creek with the vehicle.  Before we left the house, we said a prayer, and asked God to bless our home and if it was His will, please save our home.

We got back to the house about 1:00 a.m. with the fire still inching up & over the hill towards our home, and our neighbors across the road as well.  By this time, though, the DNRC brought out a Strike Team to sit at our houses and guard them (a strike team is a group of 6 men on a huge pumper fire truck ready to protect homes and evacuate people if need be).  Wesley was absolutely exhausted when we got to the house, so I told him I would stay up & watch the fire, and I’d wake him up if I had a question.  About 3:00 a.m. (Thursday night/Friday morning) the winds shifted once again, and the fire was heading our direction.  I woke Wesley up and he went outside to take a closer look at things.  He came back in & told me if the winds don’t change directions within the next 15 minutes that we were getting the hell out of there.  We went back outside 15 minutes later, and could see the wind shifted, yet again.  Then, about 4 a.m. I heard the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard…Rain…hard rain!  It rained for about 2 hours steady, then lightly drizzled for another 4.  It was a blessing from above that’s for sure.  That rain helped put out the fire, and save everyone’s homes from potential danger.  What a relief!!  We were so thankful that the rain came, and although it wasn’t much, it couldn’t have come at a better time!

Friday we spent going around the property & assessing the damages, and watching for potential hot spots.  Then we came in that afternoon for a much needed nap.  To say that we were all exhausted was an understatement.

Saturday morning we got up early in the morning, saddled up, and began to drive all the cattle that had spread throughout the pastures back to one pasture, and to greener pastures where they’d be out of the smoky ash, and into clean air & water.  It took all day to get the cows rounded up, but we did it.  We lost 2 calves, and 1 cow, and considering how rapidly the fire raced thru the pastures, and how hot and smoky it was, we were very, VERY lucky to only lose 3 head.  By the time Saturday rolled around they had multiple DNRC strike teams out at the ranch, 2 dozers, 1 blade, and I can’t tell you how many firefighters.  They were starting to back burn again that day to help strengthen the fire lines.  Saturday evening after Wesley and I got in the house, we both crashed early.   3 nights of little to no sleep had definitely caught up to us, and we wanted to get a good night’s sleep before Sunday.

Sunday we tried our best to hang out at the house and relax, but that didn’t quite go as planned.  Wesley had to unload 2 truckloads of hay that morning, and I went with him to watch.  Then we noticed plumes of smoke coming out of the fire on the ranch again, so we decided to drive up & take a look at what was going on.  We noticed a couple planes buzzing around in the sky, then saw a helicopter coming our way as well.  Then we realized that they were coming to assist with the fire on the ranch.  It was amazing to see these huge bomber planes dumping retardant on the fire lines to reinforce them, then the big helicopter coming along & dousing the flames with the water they drop from their helicopter!  What a sight to see!!  I should have went back to the house & grabbed my camera, but I was so fascinated with the planes that Wesley and I didn’t want to miss a minute of the action!  So, I didn’t go back for my camera.  At any rate, it was quite a sight to see.  They were so close to us it was as if we could reach up & touch them.  And, it was quite a relief to see them coming in to help assist with the firefighting efforts.

As the days go on, we are very thankful and glad to be back into a routine that does NOT include the word “fire”.  Our prayers continue to go out to those who lost their homes in a fire the southern part of the county, and we pray they get that fire out as quickly as possible.  In total acres, the fire that started on the ranch has burned about 20,000 acres; roughly 7,000 of that is on the ranch.  The rest are on neighboring pastures and land.

And on a much lighter note, we are very excited to see my parents soon!!!  As the days go by it gets closer & closer to the time that they’ll be here and we can’t wait!!  It will be a much needed good time for all of us!

Our Great Escape...to Relaxation

What an amazingly fun time we had in Deadwood, SD last weekend!   We had originally planned to leave the ranch early Friday morning, but I got home Thursday from work, and we decided what the heck – we’d go that night!!  So we called the hotel, booked a room, and headed out for Deadwood a day early.  We got there about 10:30 Thursday night, unloaded our bags, and went to do a little gambling.  Neither of us had much luck Thursday night so we called it a night and decided we’d try our luck the next day.  Friday we gambled almost  all day and had a great time doing so!  We would be up, then down, then back up again.  We enjoyed just being with each other, and being able to relax and have a good time.  We ate a nice prime rib steak for supper that evening, then went back for more gambling.

Saturday was the big concert day…Merle Haggard!  We gambled a little that Saturday, then went to supper and prepared to go see the man himself!  What a legend…that’s all I can say about Merle!  It was one of the best concerts (besides King George Strait) that I’ve ever been to, and Wesley said the same thing.  He sounded just as he ever did, and of course, sang all his greatest hits.   He sang, played the guitar, played the fiddle, carried on a conversation, and still was able to drink beer all in one night.  Now that’s pretty fantastic for a guy as young as he is!  We will forever remember that concert and are so lucky that we got to see him perform!

Sunday we got up and had breakfast on Main street in Deadwood, hit up a few slot machines (and lost), then made the drive back to the ranch.  By the time we got home Sunday afternoon, we were glad to be back.  We picked up our beloved puppy (by puppy I mean Jiggs) from his grandparents’ house, and watched junk TV shows for the rest of the evening.

We had such a great time in Deadwood, and have already planned to go back in a couple weeks when my parents come to visit!!!  That’s right…my parents are coming to visit us!  We’re all counting down the days until they get here.  There are so many fun things we’re going to do when they come up here…we can’t wait!  And Deadwood, of course, is one of them!  Hopefully the next time, though, Wesley & I will have a little bit better luck than we did last weekend.  OH well…that’s why its called gambling!

Surprisingly, our week has went by pretty fast this week.  I’ve been doing things around the house in the evenings after work, with Wesley’s help, and we’re getting things prepared for when my Mom & Dad come.  We’re getting ready to start weaning our babies from their moms in the next few weeks.  I can’t believe it’s already that time of year, but it is.  We’re pregnancy testing our heifers the week my parents are here, so we’re excited that they’ll get a good “ranch” experience when they’re up here.  It’ll be a fun day!  We have a roping in Forsyth this Saturday, and we aren’t sure what we’re going to do on Sunday yet.  But, we’re hoping it doesn’t get too hot out there.  The highs are in the upper 90’s so we’ll see if they stay there, or climb into the 100’s like they have been doing.  We still need rain badly, and keep praying that we’ll get some soon.

Have a great weekend!!

Weekend Get-a-way

Our weekend last weekend was eventful and relaxing all at the same time (can it be possible??).  It started off with a call just after midnight about a fire burning in our back pasture.  It turns out that it wasn’t on ours, but on our neighbors pasture that backs up to ours.  Wesley went up to help fight the fire, but thank God it was raining that morning (lightning is what started the blaze) because the rain helped put the fire out.  The county fire truck & CAT bulldozer came out to put a fire line around the fire, so Wesley and I led him thru the pastures up to the best place for him to put up the fire line.  David got the tractor & disk & started disking another fire line just in case it got out of hand.  Luckily for everyone, it didn’t.  We got home early that morning about 4 AM, and tried our best to get some sleep.

Saturday we went up on the divide at the ranch & checked our pastures to make sure there were no little “hot spots” brewing from all the cloud to ground lightning strikes we had the night before.  Then that afternoon Wesley & I loaded up the horses & steers & headed to town for a roping.  Wesley got 3rd in the draw pot, and yes, I was very proud again!!  I never get tired of watching him rope and it never gets old being so proud of him!

Sunday we did just as we had planned…N-O-T-H-I-N-G!!  We got up & ate breakfast together, painted a little on the outside of our house, then I came in & cleaned the house and we sat on the couch, took a nap, and watched a movie for the rest of the day.  We roped that evening at the ranch, then called it a night!

We have a 3 day weekend ahead of us as we are going to Deadwood, South Dakota to do a little gambling and see Merle Haggard in concert!  We can’t wait to get out of town & have a weekend to rest up from all the crazy busy weekends we’ve had these past couple months!  And, we’re pretty darn excited to see Merle Haggard too.  I hope we have some luck gambling, but more importantly, we are very excited to have some Wesley-Tiffany time!

On a side note – I live in Montana.  That’s right, Montana.  It has been averaging 100 degrees every day for the past two weeks…we need a break!  And we need some rain!  I left Texas in a drought, and it seems to have followed me to Montana.  Attention DROUGHT - you may go home at any time now.  Normally, this time of year, we are averaging high’s in the upper 80’s-lower 90’s.  Where are those temperatures??!!  Oh well…at least it feels like home (my Texas home), right?

Have a great weekend!!!

Heat Wave

Its been quite hot here in Southeastern Montana this past week.  We’ve had high’s in the upper 90’s-lower 100’s, which is about 15 degrees above normal for us.  The evenings aren’t cooling off that much, but when they do it is very pleasant outside.  Last Saturday we attended the wedding of one of Wesley’s friends Cole.  It was a long day for us since Wesley was a groomsman in the wedding, but its ok!  We had a fun time dancing and talking to our friends Clint & Sarah.  Sunday we had another round robin roping in Miles City, and it was so hot & windy again.  On the way home we had a blowout on the trailer (with 3 horses & 6 steers loaded in there) so it took us a little bit to get the trailer jacked up to change the tire.  We made it home fine, but were exhausted by that evening.  This week we didn’t do much since its been so hot in the evenings.  We roped Tuesday night at the house, and will probably rope tonight  some as well.  I'm excited to get Reno back out in the arena and work on barrels with him.  He's been doing so good, and I know he'll become excellent at it.  He's my little partner in crime, besides Wesley, of course :)

Yesterday (the 12th) was Moo Moo’s birthday so we grilled hamburgers & hot dogs and all had supper together.  It was an enjoyable time talking and eating together since we haven’t done that in quite some time.

This Saturday we have a roping in Forsyth, and then NOTHING to do on Sunday!!  We are so excited about our Sunday filled with nothing.  I think we’ll go fishing in our fishing hole again, or maybe do a little swimming.  Nonetheless, we will have a relaxing Sunday…and we both need it!

I’ve gotten a few more engagement pictures in so I thought I’d share them!  Hope you enjoy & have a fantastic weekend!!
